Libraries
Abingdon, Botley and Oxford Central are now Core Libraries.
Work with local communities to establish a network of volunteers in some libraries will begin following a decision taken on Monday 12th December by Oxfordshire County Council's Cabinet on a plan that will see all 43 public libraries remain open.
"We have however recognised the strength of public feeling about libraries and have come up with a compromise which we believe is viable. The Library Service will now work with the public to establish a sustainable future for each of the 21 libraries where volunteers will contribute towards staffing levels."
Core Libraries will remain fully staffed by council employees, meeting the council's statutory requirement to provide a comprehensive and efficient network, and include those situated in Abingdon, Botley and Oxford Central.
The council's current overall financial plan includes savings from the Library Service of £1.053M by 2014/15.
A move towards single-staffed mobile libraries will mean a £84,000 saving and changes in Book Fund arrangements and the vehicle replacement programme will achieve an additional £60,000 saving.

The Mobile Library comes to Appleton fortnightly on Thursdays: 2:45pm - 3:45pm
Please note that the Mobile Library vehicle is about to have it's annual service
and will be next in Appleton on the 5th April.
The mobile library visits Appleton every month. It can be found outside the village shop in Eaton Road fortnightly on a Thursday afternoon between 2.45pm and 3.45pm. The library is surprisingly spacious inside and full of books from floor to ceiling, as well as displaying a range of popular videos, which can be hired for a small fee for two weeks at a time. There is a good selection of books for pre-school and school age children at one end and at child height. The library has some large print books, a good selection of fiction titles as well as some more specialist non-fiction books, including titles on country living, gardening, cookery and local history. Books can be ordered so even best sellers and newly published titles can be obtained for a small fee. The staff manning the mobile library are both friendly and helpful - providing an excellent service for readers of all ages.
Full information on this service is given on the Oxfordshire County Council Library Service website.
