Sunday 15th August: Ascott under Wychwood
Result: Appleton win by 213 runs
Appleton 318 for 3: Ascott under Wychwood 105 all out
The 300 Club
ACC played a remarkable fixture against Ascott-Under-Wychwood on Sunday Aug 15th. Remarkable? Yes, ACC posted their highest ever score (318), the top 4 all hit 50s, Ben Salmon smashed his first 6 and the bad feeling and aggro of last year's fixture - which drove one ACC stalwart to cower under his duvet in fear of retribution (Manning) - failed to materialise.
On a lovely sunny afternoon on a pitch boobytrapped with ruts and football markings, Appleton went into bat. Martin Bungay played a brutal, thumping knock whilst his opening parttner Eddie Gilkes relied on his timing and soft hands. Both raced to their 50s before Martin sportingly chipped his wicket away with the worst shot we're likely to see this Summer. A ton beckoned but alas, it wasn't to be. Eddie looked set but played on to a beaut after top scoring with 62. Not to be undone, Alex Gilkes (54) and Dan Woolner (60) played with dash and artistry and soon reached their individual milestones. The whiff of 300 was in the air. Roger Gilkes - who filled in for Ascott - and David Roach recalled a match against Eynsham years ago when we reached the magical 300... a game where Alex Morgan scored a century and Andy Buck was retired on 49.
The 300 was on, but not a certainty. However, Tom Biggs (28) and Ben Salmon (20) had other ideas. A brutal joint knock ensued with both batters smacking unlikely shots. Ben even had the audacity to walk three yards to his leg-side and then crack one between his stumps and the wicky to the off-side boundary. The 300 came with a mighty hoik of Ben's eyebrows into the pavillion tiles.
Feeling confident with their total, the ACC players scoffed huge amounts of tea before re-entering the fray. Martin skippered beautifully by allowing those who didn't bat to do all the bowling. Carl McKno and Bobby Uren were fast and feisty with Carl causing masyhem and injury to the batters and his own fielders. Salmon tried to take one with his mouth and Eddie took one on his well plucked eyebrow.
With Rob taking 2 for 14 and Carl 1 for 8, Bungay turned to his well-timbered twosome: David Roach and Carl Alder. True, they got a little tonked, but with such a total to defend, they winkled out the wickets thanks to some smart catching and some fine stump work by Woolner. Finishing on 3-46 and 2-40 respectively, Roach and Alder wondered could either get close enough to Bucky's ever shifting bowling average criteria to claim the Bowling Cup? Probably not!
Four jugs, huge hits, clever bowling and an Appleton win by some 213 runs. A game none will forget. A game played in great spirit by two teams who saw the fun, adventure and absurdity of the occasion.
David Roach

vs Isis CC - 40 Over Match | Result: Appleton WIN by 2 wickets.
Played at Appleton.
Match Summary: Appleton won the toss and elected to field.
Isis CC - 133 for 9 from 40 overs.
- Appleton batting: E Gilkes 70*; M Wood 21; T Crowe 11*.
- Appleton bowling: R Uren 8 - 2 - 10 - 2.
Appleton CC - 134 for 8 from 39.2 overs.
It went to the wire in this match with Eddie "Nice Guy" Gilkes steadying the good ship Appleton as we chased down the Isis total. Isis made a slow start to their innings but reached a decent score of 133. Appleton also made a slow start but were helped, as mentioned, by a solid undefeated stand from Eddie and quick-fire knocks of 21 and 11 not out from Matt Wood and Tom Crowe, respectively.
Despite running in all arms and legs with his tongue hanging out Rob Uren was the pick of the Appleton bowlers going for only 10 runs off his opening eight overs taking two wickets in the process. Well done, sir!
ACC line-up: E Gilkes, M Bungay (c), M Wood, D Manning, J Elford, A Buck, M Godwin, J Crowe, D Roach, T Crowe, R Uren.

vs Trumpton XI - Twenty20 | Result: Trumpton WIN by 3 wickets.
Played at Appleton.
Match Summary: Appleton won the toss and elected to field.
Appleton CC - 111(!) all out from 20 overs.
- Appleton batting: M Wood 38; J Crowe 28*; C Alder 6.
- Appleton bowling: G Alder 2 - 0 - 11 - 2
Trumpton XI - 114 for 7 from 19.1 overs.
The game against Trumpton is a regular fixture and one that all Appletonians look forward to as it's a chance for a bit of friendly sledging. Tim Cruttenden's team, Trumpton, fielded ruthlessly and didn't allow more than two Appleton batsmen get into double figures. It was down to Matt Wood to provide a high score and another Crowe cameo, this time from Tom's younger brother Jack - a career high score of 28 not out - well done, sir! Appleton finished their allotted twenty with a Nelson (111).
The Trumpton openers were fearless and nonchalantly hit openers T Crowe and McKno for boundaries. The standard was clearly high with a number of OCA team colours in attendance. That said, the cricket was a joy to watch and despite the result, all enjoyed an ale or two in the Plough afterwards. Of course Tim Cruttenden had the final say, pulling Justin Elford to cow corner for four to seal victory for Trumpton. Good stuff.
ACC line-up: G Alder, C McKno, A Buck, M Wood, J Elford, M Bungay (c), A Hammond, D Manning, T Crowe, M Godwin, J Crowe, C Alder.

vs Thorley Manor CC - Twenty20 | Result: Appleton WIN by 6 runs.
Played at Thorley Manor, Isle of Wight.
Match Summary: Appleton won the toss and elected to bat.
Appleton CC - 123 for 7 from 20 overs.
- Appleton batting: M Bungay 31*; T Crowe 19; J Bennett 16.
- Appleton bowling: T Crowe 4 - 1 - 22 - 3
Thorley Manor CC - 117 for 4 from 20 overs.
The second game of the Overseas Tour was played in the glorious surroundings of Thorley Manor. The Lord of the Manor was sadly away (in the Carribean - the lucky git) but had arranged for a team to be selected nontheless.
With the England v Germany world cup game due to start at 1500hrs both teams decided to start the match at 1030hrs and limit each innings 20 overs. Despite the early start the temperature had already started to soar. Several sore heads were once again in attendance (on the tiles in Newport) and the prospect of running around chasing a red leather ball was a curious one.
Thankfully Appleton batted first and, as is the tradition on Tour, the batting order was reversed from the previous day. Poor old Tour virgin Tom Biggs notched up his second duck of the tour but club starer Tom Crowe was soon in bat and tonking the ball here, there and everywhere. Club Secretary John Bennett also fancied some runs and showed his sons how to do it with a capable 16. Of course it was down to Captain Bungay to come in and do the bulk of the damage with a handy 31 not out. Appleton finished with 123 runs after 20 overs.
When Thorley Manor took to the crease ACC had perhaps underestimated them. The score at the end of the match was closer than expected with the home team narrowly missing out on a victory.
Once again this was a game played in good spirits and in glorious conditions.
ACC line-up: D Kinnaird, T Biggs, A Hammond, T Crowe, J Bennett, B Gilkes, J Bennet Jnr, M Bungay, G Alder, D Manning, E Gilkes.

vs Porchfield CC - 40 Over Timed Match | Result: Draw (timed game).
Played at Porchfield, Isle of Wight.
Match Summary: Appleton won the toss and elected to bat.
Appleton CC - 134 all out from 37.4 overs.
- Appleton batting: M Bungay 43, D Kinnaird 22; E Gilkes 15.
- Appleton bowling: T Crowe 15 - 3 - 46 - 4.
Porchfield CC - 118 for 5 from 35 overs.
Appleton began their overseas tour on the hottest day of the year at Porchfield CC near Newport on the Isle of Wight. The pitch was in immaculate condition with flat and quick outfield. Captain Bungay was glad to have won the toss and didn't hesitate in electing to bat. With some fairly sore heads from the night before (on the tiles in Ryde) Appleton struggled in the heat. Eddie Gilkes and Dave Manning saw off the opening bowlers so that Bungay could come in and hit out - which he duly did posting a quick-fire 43. Appleton ended their innings on 134 all out and perhaps hoped for more.
Porchfield came out to bat having cleverly stuffed ACC with more tea than ever seen previously. Tom Crowe was the pick of the bowlers and took on the lion's share of the overs taking four wickets in two very economical spells. It soon became clear that Porchfield wouldn't be able to reach their target without risking losing the game. With this in mind they became very defensive and saw out the remaining half hour of the game scoring 118 from 35 overs.
ACC line-up: E Gilkes, D Manning, G Alder, M Bungay, J Bennett Jnr, B Gilkes, J Bennett, T Crowe, A Hammond, T Biggs, D Kinnaird.
Sunday 20th June 2010
vs Charlton-on-Otmoor CC - 40 Over Match | Result: Appleton WIN by 16 runs.
Played at Appleton.
Match Summary: Appleton won the toss and elected to bat.
Appleton CC - 102 all out from 33.2 overs.
- Appleton batting: R Gilkes 32; T Crowe 17*; E Gilkes 15.
- Appleton bowling: D Roach 5 - 2 - 14 - 3.
Charlton-on-Otmoor CC - 86 all out from 32.2 overs.
Yet another close low-scoring game at the sportsfield with Appleton batting first and scoring only 102. The score was largely thanks for Roger "Lynchpin" Gilkes and a late cameo from Tom Crowe. But Appleton took to the field knowing they'd previously held Wayfarers to a sub-100 score the week before. But Charlton began well and captain Bungay was heard muttering "should have fielded first" under his breath. ACC fines director Dave "Blood Sub" Roach had other plans. As is so often the case, the game turned when he turned his arm and other bowlers soon got amongst the wickets. Charlton left the field defeated after 33.2 overs having scored only 86 runs.
ACC line-up: E Gilkes, D Manning, A Gilkes, M Bungay (c), D Wollner, R Gilkes, A Buck, M Godwin, T Crowe, C Alder, D Roach.
Wednesday 16th June 2010
vs ERM XI - Twenty20 | Result: Appleton WIN by 39 runs.
Played at Appleton.
Match Summary: Appleton won the toss and elected to bat.
Appleton CC - 122 for 2 from 20 overs.
- Appleton batting: A Buck 30*; M Bungay 26*; G Alder 24.
- Appleton bowling: C Alder 3 - 0 - 21 - 3.
ERM XI - 83 all out from 19.2 overs.
Appleton made fairly short work of the ERM work team with Dave Manning playing for the opposition. A another good game played in good spirits by all. See you next year ERM!
ACC line-up: G Alder, T Crowe, M Bungay (c), B Gilkes, A Buck, J Elford, S Daniel, C McKno. M Godwin, C Alder, A Hammond.
Sunday 13th June 2010
vs Wayfarers CC - 40 Over Match | Result: Appleton WIN by 69 runs.
Played at Appleton.
Match Summary: Appleton won the toss and elected to bat.
Appleton CC - 125 all out from 37.4 overs.
- Appleton batting: M Wood 19; G Alder 15; A Hammond 14.
- Appleton bowling: T Crowe 8 - 0 - 28 - 5; C McKno 7.4 - 0 - 27 - 5.
Wayfarers CC - 56 all out from 15.4 overs.
One of the lowest scoring games of the season with both teams struggling with the bat. Appleton started well with both openers looking comfortable but then the collapse came. Appleton eventually finished their innings with 125 runs. What no-one could foresee was the fire-breathing Tom Crowe and the rapid Carl McKno taking five wickets a piece within 16 overs. Wayfares were bowled out for 56 and Appleton were in the pub earlier than usual!
ACC line-up: E Gilkes, D Manning, M Wood, G Alder, A Gilkes, M Bungay (c), M Godwin, A Hammond, R Gilkes, T Crowe, C McKno.
Sunday 6th June 2010
vs Far From The MCC - 40 Over Match | Result: Appleton WIN by 142 runs.
Played at Brasenose College Cricket Ground, Oxford.
Match Summary: Appleton won the toss and elected to bat.
Appleton CC - 240 for 7 from 40 overs.
- Appleton batting: A Gilkes 100*; M Bungay 28; S Hancock 26.
- Appleton bowling: A Buck 7.2 - 0 - 20 - 3
Far From The MCC - 98 all out from 30.2 overs.
After a weekend for ACC normal service resumed with Bungay at the helm. Appleton took to the field in splendid conditions (apart from the occasional goose turd on the outfield!) and set a huge target of 240 for the home side. A Gilkes took advantage of a good batting track and hit another splendid century - well done, sir! Having set a target Appleton were ruthless in their bowling attack and, despite fervent resistance from the FFTMCC openers, the home side soon closed on 98 all out.
ACC line-up: R Gilkes, G Alder, M Wood, C McKno, A Gilkes, M Bungay (c), S Hancock, D Manning, A Buck, M Godwin, T Crowe.
Thursday 27th May 2010
vs Cairns Fudge CC - Twenty20 | Result: Cairns Fudge WIN by 73 runs.
Played at Appleton.
Match Summary: Cairns Fudge won the toss and elected to bat.
Cairns Fudge CC - 169 from 20 overs.
- Appleton batting: A Morgan 21; G Alder 18; R Gilkes 13.
- Appleton bowling: S Daniel 4 - 0 - 24 - 3
Appleton CC - 96 all out from 16.5 overs.
Appleton's sterling start to the season came to an end today. With both skipper Martin Bungay and vice-skip Andy Buck both away a brave Dave Manning took on the captain's armband and suffered a heavy defeat. Heads can be held high though as Cairns Fudge play regularly in the OCA and have a very strong side. We move on!
ACC line-up: E Gilkes, G Alder, M Wood, R Tyack, A Morgan, R Gilkes, S Daniel, M Godwin, D Manning (c), A Hammond, C McKno.
Sunday 23rd May 2010
vs Astons CC - 40 Over Match | Result: ACC win by 93 runs.
Played at Aston Tirrold.
Match Summary: Appleton won the toss and elected to bat.
Appleton CC - 270 for 4 from 40 overs.
- Appleton batting: A Gilkes 116*, A Buck 31*, M Bungay 29.
- Appleton bowling: A Buck 7 - 1 - 28 - 3
Astons CC - 177 all out after 35 overs.
The warmest day of the year brought the best out of Appleton with a huge score of 270 runs posted after the toss was won by captain Bungay and the decision was made to get out in the heat and have a bat. After a shaky start Appleton soon recovered with Alex Gilkes as the lynch pin forming good partnerships with his brother Ed, captain Bungay, his father Roger and finally vice-skip Buck who finished the innings with him. A splendid knock of 116 not out will prove difficult to forget - especially considering Alex hadn't wielded a blade since late last season.
Appleton welcomed back villager Ben Salmon who played as though he'd spent the winter on the sub-continent perfecting his slow right-arm bowling with two Astons players losing their wickets to his wrong'un! Appleton also welcomed Carl "The Bear" Alder who, although not a natural cricketer, took a diving catch at point from Andy Buck's bowling.
ACC line-up: E Gilkes (wk), D Manning, G Alder, M Bungay (c), A Gilkes, R Gilkes, A Buck, C McKno, B Salmon, J Bennett, C Alder.
Tuesday 18th May 2010
vs Sophos - Twenty20 | Result: Appleton WIN by 105 runs.
Played at Wantage CC.
Match Summary: Appleton won the toss and elected to bat.
Appleton CC - 199 for 1 from 20 overs.
- Appleton batting: C McKno 32 ret.; E Gilkes 28 ret.; J Bowerman 26 ret.; M Wood 26 ret.
- Appleton bowling: G Alder 2 - 1 - 1 - 2
Sophos - 94 for 9 from 20 overs.
Appleton took advantage of some lovely batting conditions to gain the largest 20 over game score of the season thus far. The top six batsmen each retired after scoring 25 runs. Greg Alder finished the match with rarely seen bowling figures of two wickets for one run from two overs. Crazy.
ACC line-up: E Gilkes, A Morgan, C McKno, M Wood, M Bungay, J Bowerman, A Buck, M Godwin, S Hancock, G Alder, R Gilkes.
Sunday 16th May 2010
vs Sunningwell CC - Timed Match | Result: MATCH ABANDONED after ACC Innings due to rain.
Played at Sunningwell.
Match Summary: Sunningwell won the toss and elected to field.
Appleton CC - 159 for 8 from 32 overs.
- Appleton batting: M Bungay 43; C McKno 26*, D Manning 22.
We were due rain on a Sunday and things turned very grey after about 30 overs. The heavens opened and players and officials were called off after the thirty second over and tea was taken early. Despite the rain letting off the damage had been done leaving the pitch in a pretty sorry state. Appleton looked in a good position with a number of decent batting performances against a very accurate Sunningwell bowling attack. Nevermind - let's hope for sunshine next weekend!
ACC line-up: R Gilkes (wk), D Manning, G Alder, M Bungay (c), S Hancock, A Buck, R Uren, M Godwin, J Elford, C McKno.
Wednesday 12th May 2010
vs Southmoor XI - Twenty20 | Result: Appleton WIN by 30 runs.
Played at Appleton.
Match Summary: Southmoor won the toss and elected to field.
Appleton CC - 147 for 6 from 20 overs.
- Appleton batting: A Buck 30 ret.; E Gilkes 26 ret.; A Wallace 23 ret.
Southmoor XI - 117 all out after 19.1 overs.
The annual match between Appleton and those Appleton players who live in the fine villages of Kingston Bagpuize, Southmoor and Longworth. Considered by many as more of a social event than a cricket match but competitive nonetheless. Appleton batted well and reached a cool 147 at the end of their innings. Southmoor were always up against it and limped to 117 all out after 19.1 overs. Good fun had by all though!
ACC line-up: A Wallace, D Roach, A Buck, A Hammond, M Bungay (c), S Daniel, E Gilkes, G Readshaw, A Morgan, C McKno, R Gilkes (wk).
Sunday 9th May 2010

Appleton CC - 239 for 9 from 40 overs.
- Appleton batting: E Gilkes 78; G Alder 77.
Eynsham CC - 108 all out after 31.2 overs.
A good result once again which makes it three wins out of three for ACC! A welcome return to the outfield for Matt "Biff" Godwin, whose exploits earned him champagne moment. Greg Alder performed particularly well with the bat but was fined for "Frank Spencer batting"!
ACC line-up: E Gilkes (wk), D Manning (wk), G Alder, M Bungay (c), S Hancock, J Bennett, A Buck, M Godwin, C McKno, R Uren, A Hammond.
Sunday 25th April 2010

- Appleton bowling: C McKno 6 - 1 - 40 - 6 - Econ 6.67.
Islip CC - 100 all out after 27.3 overs.
Another good performance by all players on a lively pitch that offered little for the batsman. Many, many thanks to the brave few who came along to watch on what turned out to be quite a cold day!
ACC line-up: D Manning, E Bennett, M Bungay (c), S Daniel, D Hill (wk), J Bennett Jnr, A Buck, M Godwin, C McKno, R Uren, G Readshaw.
Sunday 18th April 2010
