Appleton War Memorial
From the website of United Kingdom National Inventory of War Memorials it is recorded that the Appleton War Memorial was unveiled at a ceremony on 2nd April 1921 by Lt Col JN Aldworth with a dedication by the Archdeacon of Oxford**. It is descibed as "Cross of Portland stone and 13 feet high and a base of York stone". The "Physical description is: small wheel cross with octagonal shaft, square plinth and two stepped octagonal base." The Ordnance Survey reference is SP 445 014. The designer was Rev FCR Jourdain and the builder Mr AE Lock.
**The "Archdeacon" was Bishop Edward Domett Shaw, Bishop of Buckingham from 1914 to 1921 and the Grandfather of Park Lane resident, Roger Gilkes! Details of Bishop Shaw can be found at link Bishop Shaw
