Appraisal Conclusions

Through the years the number of buses from Appleton and Eaton to Oxford have been cut frequently. This is not really surprising when it was revealed, in the responses we received, that 59% of those who answered stated that they never use the bus service. A further 35% use the service only occasionally. However, a regular reliable service is still an important need for those who have to rely on public transport not only for shopping, but also as a means of getting to the railway and coach stations, for getting to work, as well as for appointments with doctors, dentists, hospitals, hairdressers, etc. It is hoped that the need for this service to the community is sympathetically regarded, to give a quality to life for those in rural areas who lack private means of transport. It may be in the future, if plans to reduce the volume of traffic on the roads can be successfully implemented, public transport may come into its own again, especially as the cost of parking in the towns or on their perimeters increases.

UPDATE 2009

From October 2007 a non-peak bus service was awarded to Whites Coaches. The service is a ‘hail-and-ride’ service leaving the War Memorial on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 0955, 1207 & 1407 and returning from Castle Street to Appleton 1100, 1300 & 1500 This is known as Route 63.

Stagecoach operates a 06:54am and 07:57am service into Oxford Mondays to Fridays. This is Route 66.

There is a bus service from Appleton to Abingdon twice a week: Monday and Friday. It leaves Appleton at 9.50 am and leaves Abingdon for the return journey at 1.0 pm. Though there are not many people who use this bus we are glad to know that the service will continue.

The free bus to Tesco Superstore runs on Tuesdays 11.20 am and returns 1.30 pm, and on Thursdays 10.20 am and returns at 12.30 pm. The picking up point is in Oaksmere opposite the Village Hall.
