Village Amenities

VILLAGE AMENITIES

The answers to our questionnaire revealed some interesting details:

Services
  • 100% of our residents have electricity
  • 100% have mains water
  • 95% have mains drainage
  • 99% have a telephone
  • There are two public telephone boxes - one by The Eight Bells in Eaton and one outside the Community Shop and Post Office, Eaton Road in Appleton
Street Lighting
  • 83% thought that the lighting was ‘good’ or reasonable’.
Pavements
61 % wanted more pavements - some mentioned Oaksmere but the majority had in mind Netherton Road.
This has been an on-going concern for many years and the Parish Council has tried again and again to press the Highways Department to provide a pavement in this area. However, each time we has been told that Netherton Road is not high on the list of priorities for there have been no fatal accidents in the area! However, in 2002 we delighted to be informed that as a result of pressure from the community and lead by Ros Uren, the Oxfordshire County Council approved the building of a pathway along the Netherton Road and this was completed in January 2004.

Over half of the people who answered our questionnaire have dogs. Perhaps it would be appropriate here, seeing that pavements have just been mentioned, to take the opportunity to remind you that we have a DOG FOULING BYLAW operating in Appleton. We plead with dog owners to use a scoop when you take your dog for ‘walkies’. For those who let their dogs run loose around the streets, may we say that one day someone may just decide to report you to the Vale Authorities. The fine is now £1,000. So you have been warned!

GAS
Quite a number of people would choose to use gas if it was available. A number of years ago the Parish Council made enquiries about the possibility of having gas piped to the two villages. At that time it would have cost about £100,000 and then each householder would have had to pay to have it piped into their home.

HOW APPLETON AND EATON MEASURE UP ON SERVICES
The Parish Council received a Survey of Rural Services from the ORCC. In it we read:

  • 20% of Villages have no main sewage
  • 28% of Villages have no Village Hall
  • 29% of Villages have no Public House
  • 42% of Villages have no Shop
  • 43% of Villages have no Post Office
  • 49% of Villages have no School
  • 75% of Villages have no Bus service

How fortunate we are in Appleton and Eaton!
