Upgrade the Cumnor Exchange...Now...for faster Broadband in Appleton & Eaton
|
In the next couple of years BT is rolling out superfast broadband over most of Oxford. But sadly the Cumnor Exchange, which serves the Parish of Appleton with Eaton, is not to be upgraded! Unless we can change BT’s mind, the Cumnor Exchange, and we, will be stuck in the slow lane until 2015, probably longer.
As internet usage increases for business, education, working from home and entertainment, more and more bandwidth is needed. Service in Appleton & Eaton, and the area that is served by the Cumnor Exchange, will fall even further behind the rest of Oxford.
BT is a private company. By law, it doesn’t have to upgrade us. It may do if it sees a profitable investment. So it’s vital that we all signal that we want and need superfast broadband.
We can do this by voting in BT’s “Race to Infinity” challenge. This is a BT competition between 2,500 smaller exchanges not on the upgrade plan. Just go to the website, enter your postcode and phone number, and “vote” for Cumnor exchange. It costs nothing. Even if you have a Virgin connection, vote anyway. Competition is good for choice and lower prices.
The top five exchanges getting at least 1000 votes will be considered for an upgrade. But even those not making it into the top five have a better chance of an upgrade if they have a high vote. In its negotiations with BT, Oxfordshire Country Council will be able to argue Cumnor’s case. So make sure you, neighbours and friends have all voted. Photocopy this document. Pass it on. Email all your friends.

How is Cumnor exchange doing in the race? As of 22 November, it had received 347 votes out of a possible of 2865 subscribers in the Cumnor exchange. That’s 11.94%
- So far it is ranked 58 out of nearly 2,500 exchanges: good, but not good enough!
o The competition ends on 31 December 2010
o We need at least 700 more votes: at least 15 every day!

Superfast Broadband
A Parish campaign group has been very heavily involved in promoting awareness to villagers of the benefits to be gained in having the Cumnor telephone exchange upgraded. The exchange covers Appleton, Eaton, Farmoor and Cumnor.
Cumnor is now in the race!!!
In order to be considered worthy of entering the race, BT has set a target of 1,000 votes for each of the exchanges. Some of the exchanges even smaller than ours will find that to be a vote too far. Two exchanges, however, have already reached the target - and we need to have Cumnor join them, at the moment (21/11/2010) we have 342 votes which mean we are only 1/3 rd of the way there!
So now the race is really on.
If you've already voted, Thank You, and please encourage your friends, neighbours and family to vote as well - remember, only one vote per address (a flat with its own number counts as a separate address).
The next few weeks
We're about to raise our game - starting now. You'll notice some new posters around the area, and our campaign team will be at the Christmas Bazaar. Why not say hello, ask questions if you like - and we can show you how to vote as well. Or perhaps you'd like to get involved in the campaign - we could certainly do with the help.
Cumnor Broadband Campaign
Over the next five years BT is rolling out superfast fibre optic broadband across the UK. As we're not on the announced roll out plan The Race to Infinity gives us the opportunity to fast track our area to get BT Infinity in early 2012, instead of having to wait until between 2015 and 2020.
The five areas with the largest percentage of votes by December 31st 2010 will win the chance to bring superfast broadband to their area. Our actual target, set by BT, is listed as being 2,865 - so our percentage achieved is based on that number of potential votes. You don't need to be a BT subscriber - just have a land line, either residential or business, and you don't need to have your own computer.
Whether you're big on social networking, gaming, streaming, uploading or downloading, prepare to have your life transformed with superfast speeds.
Take a look at the BT website and then place your vote - it takes just over one minute. THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY NOT TO BE MISSED.
The BT website is HERE. To vote simply go to 'VOTE NOW' and enter your details. Don't forget to pass it on to your friends on Facebook and Twitter to get Cumnor exchange to the top of the scoreboard.
