Hosting a six-a-side at Appleton which Eddie Gilkes excellently organised, was a first for ACC and there are plans to run this competition in future seasons. Thanks to those teams participating the event was successful both financially and as a sporting event. With the overall objective of enjoying cricket played in a fair and sporting manner, it is terrific to report of the 35 people who played cricket for the club in 2008, over 50% (actually 19) currently live in Appleton. The big “find” of the season was the involvement of the Bennett family – father John and two sons Elliott and Jack: having previously spent their summer sporting activity on the golf course, they decided, after eight years living in Appleton, to see what ACC could offer and each made important contributions on and off the field. This year ACC organised an “overseas tour” to Bath. Club member and one time villager, John Davies, now a resident of Bath, was kind enough to assemble friends from the Pig and Fiddle pub who discarded their football boots and took to some whites (well … grey, blue, red or any colour imaginable!). A memorable week end during which some members of the club slept in the Bath Youth Hostel and between Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening managed seven visits to the Pig! Cricket was played on a doggy wicket and in the wind and rain – but the club managed a win! André and Heidi took over the Plough earlier in the year and ACC was made to feel most welcome. Let’s hope they are here to stay! Below are some of the statistics of the season: - • Seventeen matches were won and seven lost giving a 71% win factor • Two centuries were scored by ACC players: Tim Cruttenden and Matt Wood • Fifteen half centuries were scored by ACC players: Martin Bungay x 6, Tim Cruttenden x 3 and one each by Andy Buck, Alex Gilkes, Ed Gilkes, Andy Farrell, Sam Hancock and Matt Wood • ACC scored a total of 3,892 runs losing 172 wickets giving an average per wicket of 22.63 runs versus our opponents 3394 runs and losing 219 wickets giving an average per wicket of 15.50 runs • The top wicket taker was ACC Captain Andy Buck with 27 wickets taken and an average of 11.44. Martin Bungay and Dave Manning also took 27 wickets, Martin with an average of 14.70 and Dave with 16.33. Martin was the only ACC bowler with a five-wicket haul in a match. The square has been scarified, seeded and loamed, the annual awards dinner was held at the Blue Boar in Longworth on Saturday 15th November, the fixtures agreed for 2009 and we will start again in May 2009.
