01 January 2010
30th January 2010: Beware: icy road at Oaksmere. At about 1.30pm on Saturday afternoon a car spun off the road into the wall in Oaksmere, the female occupant of the car was badly shaken but unharmed. This was the second incident today of problems with the icy road. Action On Saturday: As the Highways dept. was shut on Saturday, Thames Valley Police were contacted: they will pass information to the emergency Highways dept. It has been stressed that at the very least signs need to go up that the road is icy and that gritting is really imperative now.
29th January 2010:Retirement! What a way to finish! Kris Band, Janet & John Thompson would like to thank everyone in the Parish for the way they have expressed their love and their appreciation of the work the three of us have done, over many years, for the Advertiser. We are overwhelmed, not only by the host of good wishes written in the largest cards ever to be seen and handmade by the Brownies but also by the kind thoughts in the beautifully crafted cards from the church. All will be happy reminders our time with the Appleton and Eaton Advertiser. We are truly going to enjoy our ‘retirement’ with the gifts of champagne, theatre & restaurant vouches and last but not least – a divine chocolate fudge ‘Thank You’ cake. Many thanks to you all.
27th January 2010: Congratulations to George Readshaw! Bass Guitarist Villager George Readshaw's band, called Yellow Fever, won the Thames Valley Battle of the School Bands competition at the Reading Hexagon last Saturday night, beating 40 other school bands and winning £5,000 for Matthew Arnold School Music Dept and 3 days in a recording studio. George lives with his parents in Netherton Road and the other boys live in Botley and Oxford. Well done George!
10th January 2010: Annie Blake's Jumble Sale raises £480! Annie Blake commented: "Saturday 9th January was a huge success and we raised £480 which was very unexpected, given the weather conditions, and we were so pleased! Thank you to all the helpers that so kindly gave their time to make the jumble sale possible, and to all of Appleton and Eaton for their generousity!"
7th January 2010: Fire at The Close. Mrs Natasha Batstone would like to express her sincere thanks to all friends, neighbours and villagers who rallied round her and her family during the devastation of the fire at The Close earlier this week. See the Oxford Mail website. The Fire Officer in charge of the crews that worked on the fire would like to thank villagers who were so helpful and provided the crews with tea and busicuits in the Village Hall and somewhere to relax. Well done Appleton!
4th January 2010: Claire Salmon resigns as Chairman of Parish Council: Mrs. Claire Salmon resigned as chairman of the Appleton-with-Eaton Parish Council and has been replaced as chairman by Mr. Howard Thomas. Mrs Salmon remains a councillor. Howard said: “We are very grateful for Claire’s leadership over the past 2.5 years: she has been at the helm during a challenging period and the community is grateful for her commitment to the Council.”
