End of season dinner
Appleton CC, after another successful season of fun and jovial cricket, had their end of Season dinner and awards evening this past weekend. A record number of players and their partners attended and a good night of food, drink and conversation of the seasons exploits was had by all.
The Chairman, Roger Gilkes, welcomed everyone attending the Club’s 77th Annual Awards Dinner, especially the club’s President, Steve Handscombe with his wife, Elizabeth. It was also a delight to see some vice-presidents of the club: Teresa Bennett, John & Liz Spivey his wife Liz, Jimmy Marks, Graham & Judith Rose.
Martin Bungay, the skipper for 2011, reviewed the season and thanked the officers of the club for their hard work. David Roach made a very funny speech reminding the players about some incidents last season which incurred fines.
Andy Buck explained the criteria for the awarding of club ties. He presented ties to Roger Gilkes & Leon Willis.
The President then presented the awards: -
- The Clubman of the Year award, named after Sir Nicholas Wright and voted on by club members, was won by Carl Mckno.
- The Batting Cup, the Douglas Peel trophy, was won this year by Ed Gilkes.
- The Bowling Cup was won by The Bear (Carl Alder), with an average of 12.
- The Catching Cup, the Top Sport trophy, named after Mr Handscombe’s sports shops chain (TopSport), was won again this year by Martin Bungay, with 15 catches.
- The Senior Player of the Year award, called the Rose trophy, was voted on by the 24 club members. This year the winner was Martin Bungay.
- The Young Player of the Year award, named the Jim Griffiths Cup, after a club member from earlier days, was voted on by ACC members. The voting was close, but the winner was Elliott Bennett.
- The Dropped Catches award, named the Roach trophy after its first winner, was won by Martin Bungay, with 8 drops.
The formal part of the evening concluded with Roger Gilkes thanking the club’s skipper for his work and Dave Roach for his fines speech. The raffle was then drawn by the clubs youngest player Chris Salmon, helped along by Ben Gilkes.
