Northmoor Paddle and Rymer weir: health & safety scheme
NORTHMOOR PADDLE AND RYMER WEIR: HEALTH & SAFETY SCHEME PROPOSALS
| The Newsletter we had last week from the Environment Agency had an incorrect link for consultation on the Envirnmental Report it should be www.environment-agency.gov.uk/paddlerymer |
As many in the parish will be aware, Northmoor Weir is a Paddle and Rymer weir. Although rebuilt as recently as 1995, the Environment Agency is currently evaluating the health and safety issues surrounding such weirs along the Thames and have produced a very informative consultation document. See link here to view the Environment Agency website and the documents relating to the proposal - worthy of examaning as there are some fine photographs and lots of really interesting information! (Web editor!)
To quote from the Environmental Agency's website: -
"There are several different types of weirs on the River Thames which have developed over many years to meet the different site and operational requirements. One of the weir types is the Paddle and Rymer. This type of weir involves placing long vertical wooden posts (rymers) at suitable intervals into slots in the weir apron at river bed level. Paddles are then placed against the rymers to hold back water. Paddles can be one to three paddles deep depending on the depth of water.
"Operation of Paddle and Rymer weirs is potentially dangerous, especially when the Thames is in flood.
"We are consulting on 5 of the remaining 9 Paddle and Rymer weirs at Radcot, Blakes, Northmoor, Mapledurham and Molesey. The other 4 weirs will be consulted on at a later date as we are considering the options due to their Heritage value. The Environment Agency is now seeking further comments from interested parties and groups on the proposed works before they are finalised."
The parish has been advised that the consultation documents are due out in January 2010, but that the consultation scope is due to be published online week commencing 26th October 2009.
