APPLETON COMMUNITY SHOP FINALIST FOR BBC AWARD
Appleton: September 30th 2008. The Appleton Community Shop has been nominated as a finalist in this year’s BBC Radio 4 Food and Farming Awards in the Best Local Food Retailer category. Carol Bateman, a member of the shop management group, said: “We are delighted with the news that the Appleton Community Shop is in the final four in the category “Best Local Food Retailer” and note the other three finalists are from Pwllheli, Dorset and Manchester: to win this award would be great. The management team has a real focus on sourcing as much as we can from the surrounding area and supporting local people and businesses.” In terms of retail food sourced locally, this includes fruit and vegetables, cheese, meat and honey, and villagers supply some of the fruit and vegetables from their allotments. Additionally another villager bakes specialist bread and buns. The awards for Best Local Food Retailer and eight other categories took place on Wednesday 26th November and were be held at the Birmingham NEC. Judges for the awards visited the finalists put together a programme about the shop for “Farming Today” and “The Food Programme”. Several volunteers from the Community Shop went to the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham on 26th November 2008. Sadly we did not win but were very proud to have been a finalist. The winners – and there were joint winners in our category – were substantially larger shops.
