September 2011
28th September 2011: TV Switchover seems have have gone smoothly: It appears the signal strength for all channels is either maximum or above average. If households still have problems do send an email at appleton.website@dsl.pipex.com Editor
26th September 2011: Thanks from Frank's family: Frank White (1919 – 2011): We may not have been able to speak to you all on Tuesday, 20th September, for which we are sorry, but we would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone for their kindness, support and generosity in Frank’s life and death.
25th September 2011: Kris Band returns to Appleton; "Just to let you know, I have returned safe and sound from Hadrian’s Wall and 77 miles of hard walking having personally raised over £1,000 to date with some sponsorship money still to come in. We walked from Bowness on Solway to Heddon on the Wall over the course of five days last week to raise money for The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (based in Botley) and specifically for the purchase of mobility equipment. Thank you again to everyone who sponsored me and still time to assist!" See Hardian’s Walk
22nd September 2011: Chef gets rave reviews for first week! To protect the innocent, the website Editor received the following report from a villager. "Yes, we ate on the first night as I was disinclined to cook after a busy day and faced with an uninspiring fridge! The food was very good. We sampled the sausage and mash (great fodder for a hungry rugby player), a burger (equally sizeable) and the Thai Curry (for a more refined palate!). We were please to see that we were not the only people eating – Fish and Chips were still available for takeaway (it was Tuesday) as well as on the menu. Another family were sitting adjacent to us and each of their choices were as well received by them, as ours. One table had ordered the DIY Dinner, and the dining room was not overcome with the cooking smells that have been a problem in the past. A great improvement, we felt. There was plenty of variety on the menu which will encourage us back again before too long. It is also reasonably priced for a midweek family meal. I would happily recommend the new menu to everyone and urge people to support our pub. Not wanting to give the impression that I do not, or cannot cook myself!!, I also had lunch last week (Tuesday)(a huge chicken salad – obviously not a dieter’s choice) and a late afternoon snack (Thursday) a wooden platter of cured meat, feta cheese, bread and olives – Meze/Tapas??," Well, well! Get booking at The Plough!
20th September 2011: Frank White is laid to rest. A packed St Laurence Church paid tribute to Frank White. The service, lead by Rev Lyn Sapwell, was addressed by nephew Roger Mitty who spoke movingly and with much humour about the great man. A muffled peal was rung before the service, after and during the afternoon and evening. Food and drink was taken in The Plough after the service.
19th September 2011: EA displays Northmoor Weir design options. Several staff from the Environment Agency showed plans and design options at a well attended meeting in the Appleton Village Hall earlier this evening. Attendees were asked to "vote" on options and the first choise was for the 4 Radial scheme, second the 5 Radila scheme and third the 4 Radial scheme. The Unstepped won over the stepped design. More details will emerge! See EA Meeting for pictures of the presentation panels. Do record your vote on the website - see bottom left of the screen!

16th September 2011: Park & Ride car parking charges. Various residents have raised their concern for the imposition of car parking charges at the City Councul Park and Ride sites. The City Council is planning to introduce a new fee of £1.50 a day to park at their sites. This could cost an additional £340 a year (based on a 5 day week with 25 days holiday and 8 bank holidays). As the bus fare is £320 for an annual pass this is more than doubling the cost of using the Park and Ride service for City Centre workers. If anyone would like to voice their concerns to the City Council there is a petition http://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/oxfordparkandride which will be open until the 18th September 2011. In addition you can write to the City of Oxford before 5pm on the 21st September, the address is: - Graham Bourton, Head of Direct Services, Direct Services, Horspath Road, Oxford OX4 2RH

5th September 2011: Child's mobile phone lost: Samsung Tocca Lite was lost on Monday night on the way back up from the lock after having seen David Walliams. So it was around 8pm. The case was in the grass near the top of the lock path but there was no phone.
3rd September 2011: David Walliams swims the Thames: No doubt many will be aware that David Walliams is swimming the Thames for Sports Relief. He will swim 20 miles a day for 8 days to cover the 160 miles from its source near Lechlade to London. As the Landowner, A H Cornish (Appleton) Ltd are happy to give consent, on this one occasion, for pedestrian access only, down the Lock Road to Northmoor Lock and the Thames Path (which follows the river on the far riverbank), from 4.30pm to 9.00pm, for those who wish to support David on his final leg of day one. He is expected to arrive at Northmoor Lock around 6.20pm though this is not guaranteed. Please note, David will not be stopping for autographs or photographs. SPONSOR DAVID! David’s taking on his toughest, most physically gruelling and demanding challenge yet – to swim the Thames. Having met children struggling to survive on the streets of Kenya and seen for himself what a difference Sport Relief cash can make in the UK, he’s taking on this immense feat to raise much-needed Sport Relief cash. So show David your support and help to change lives by sponsoring him here. Thank you! www.sportrelief.com/donate/walliams
