9th March 2010: High Sheriff to Walk the Thames ... Oxfordshire! The High Sheriff of Oxfordshire will be rounding off his year in office by walking the length of Oxfordshire's Thames Path this Easter. He invites you to join him or you could sponsor him in his quest to raise funds for the Footsteps Foundation or you could join him and raise funds for a charity of your choice. The walk will start on Thursday 1st April at Lechlade and end at Henley on 5th April. There are 14 legs and details of each leg are dislayed on the website by day. The total number of miles is estimated to be 82!
9th March 2010: Millway Lane Major works at entrance to Lane: The VWHDC will be working on Millway Lane entrance from 15th to 30th March, laying a new underground drainage pipe. There will be restricted access, residents have been notified by the Peter Dela in the VWHDC. This is all to help alleviate any possible future flooding problems and should greatly improve the flow of water away from the built up areas on Netherton road.
8th March 2010: Northmoor Lock works: There was a public meeting in the village hall on Monday 8 March at 8:15 to discuss the works to be carried out at Northmoor lock and the implications for the village, particularly Badswell Lane. This spring and summer the Environment Agency is making improvements to Northmoor Lock by replacing the old weir with modern motorised gates for health and safety reasons. 7th March 2010: Over 90 bags of litter, 20 tyres and assorted objects! Litter pickers have done a great job.
6th March 2020: Eaton Roads Litter Pickers success! Penny Moorley reports: the Eaton Road Picking Gang....at least 16 adults and children started of 9am this morning and by 10.30 we had finished our task.....highly organised and working in 4 teams...and getting of for 40 sacks of rubbish (which included roughly 10 sacks of recycling, mainly Carling Export cans) plus tyres, wheels, lights, car batteries, etc etc So A BIG THANK YOU to The Gannons, the Parkers, Jess Adams, Charles Moorley (who acted as goffer all the time with his car and we could not have done so well without him), Clive Turner, Katie Ayres, Malcolm Bradbrook, Jane Jack, Roger Mitty and his Cornish companion, and an Eaton village escapee of tiling fame - amongst others.....it was so good having so many helpers and to get to meet up with 'new' villagers (only hope I can put a name to the faces now so apologies if I can't remember!). And the Vale did come up with some equipment for us so I was very grateful that we were supported after all especially with youngsters on a busy road stretch. The feeling was we should repeat the pick but that it should be on a designated weekend such as Cumnor has and involve the whole village too! But perhaps not next week!

9th February 2010: Felicity Dick, DL, features on BBC Radio Oxford: Recently appointed Oxfordshire Deputy Lieutenant Felicity Dick featured on the Jo Thoenes programme on BBC Radio Oxford on Tuesday 9th February 2010. Felicity talks at some length about her charitable work and her activities in Appleton – the Village Community Shop and the Youth Club.
8th February 2010: Vera Porter dies: It is with great sadness we report the passing away of Vera Porter, of Old England Lane, Eaton Road. Vera died in hospital early on Monday morning. She was a marvellous and very committed villager - a Parish Council Clerk, Parish Councillor and Chairman of the Parish Council. She will be solely missed. Our sympathies to her husband, Dennis, who has cared for her so wonderfully during her illness. Her funeral service will be held in St Laurence Church, Appleton at 3:00pm on Thusday 18th February.
7th February 2010: Peggy Ball dies: Mrs Peggy Ball, 92, who lived with her family in Shepherd’s Cottage, Eaton Road for several years, died from a severe stroke last Saturday. Peggy was President of the Appleton WI in the late 1960s/ early 1970s an active member of the church bazaar committee, with her handicraft skills often making toys, a parish councillor and a highly effective organiser. She founded the Appleton Evergreen Club in 1966. Her husband, Johnny, died some years ago and just after their move to Devon. Sympathies are extended to the family. 4th February 2010: Beware of the mud on the road: At the Thatched Tavern corner along the Eaton Road, Trenchwood Construction had, at mid-day, left much mud on the road and when approached had said it would not be until evening they would sprikle some water on the road! OCC Highways were phoned (Log 306280) and it was cleared by 1500hrs.
30th January 2010: Beware: icy road at Oaksmere. At about 1.30pm on Saturday afternoon a car spun off the road into the wall in Oaksmere, the female occupant of the car was badly shaken but unharmed. This was the second incident today of problems with the icy road. Action On Saturday: As the Highways dept. was shut on Saturday, Thames Valley Police were contacted: they will pass information to the emergency Highways dept. It has been stressed that at the very least signs need to go up that the road is icy and that gritting is really imperative now.
29th January 2010:Retirement! What a way to finish! Kris Band, Janet & John Thompson would like to thank everyone in the Parish for the way they have expressed their love and their appreciation of the work the three of us have done, over many years, for the Advertiser.We are overwhelmed, not only by the host of good wishes written in the largest cards ever to be seen and handmade by the Brownies but also by the kind thoughts in the beautifully crafted cards from the church. All will be happy reminders our time with the Appleton and Eaton Advertiser.We are truly going to enjoy our ‘retirement’ with the gifts of champagne, theatre & restaurant vouches and last but not least – a divine chocolate fudge ‘Thank You’ cake. Many thanks to you all.
27th January 2010: Congratulations to George Readshaw! Bass Guitarist Villager George Readshaw's band, called Yellow Fever, won the Thames Valley Battle of the School Bands competition at the Reading Hexagon last Saturday night, beating 40 other school bands and winning £5,000 for Matthew Arnold School Music Dept and 3 days in a recording studio. George lives with his parents in Netherton Road and the other boys live in Botley and Oxford. Well done George!
10th January 2010: Annie Blake's Jumble Sale raises £480! Annie Blake commented: "Saturday 9th January was a huge success and we raised £480 which was very unexpected, given the weather conditions, and we were so pleased! Thank you to all the helpers that so kindly gave their time to make the jumble sale possible, and to all of Appleton and Eaton for their generousity!"
7th January 2010: Fire at The Close. Mrs Natasha Batstone would like to express her sincere thanks to all friends, neighbours and villagers who rallied round her and her family during the devastation of the fire at The Close earlier this week. The Fire Officer in charge of the crews that worked on the fire would like to thank villagers who were so helpful and provided the crews with tea and busicuits in the Village Hall and somewhere to relax. Well done Appleton!
4th January 2010: Claire Salmon resigns as Chairman of Parish Council: Mrs. Claire Salmon resigned as chairman of the Appleton-with-Eaton Parish Council and has been replaced as chairman by Mr. Howard Thomas. Mrs Salmon remains a councillor. Howard said: “We are very grateful for Claire’s leadership over the past 2.5 years: she has been at the helm during a challenging period and the community is grateful for her commitment to the Council.”
