APPLETON WELCOMES ENVIRONMENT AGENCY NORTHMOOR WEIR PROJECT REPRIEVE

Joint News Release

Appleton: March 31st 2010. Following a special meeting with the Appleton Weir Action Group, the Environment Agency announced the postponement of the re-building work to Northmoor Weir for a year.

Carol Bateman, chairman of the recently formed Weir Action Group (WAG) said: “We are delighted with the Environment Agency decision: we are very concerned with various issues related with this project which include the loss of this historic site and two years of works and heavy traffic through the village. We look forward to working with EA to achieve the best possible solutions.”

Simon Hughes, Environment Agency Area Manager for the Thames Region commented: “The Environment Agency respects the concerns of the community and we are eager to engage in proper consultation to ensure the best solution is found.”

“The Weir Action Group and members of the community of Appleton would like to thank the Environment Agency for taking on board their concerns regarding the replacement of the weir and look forward to working with them on this important project,” said Carol.

Working groups will be formed over the next few weeks so that these solutions can be found.
